Down-the-Line

Definition

Down-the-Line (often abbreviated as DTL) is a clay pigeon shooting discipline where targets are launched away from the shooter in a straight line, but with varying horizontal angles. It is one of the most traditional and popular trap disciplines, focusing on precision and consistency.

Further Explanations

DTL is a trap shooting discipline commonly practiced in the UK and internationally. The setup consists of:

  • Trap House: Located 15 meters in front of the shooting line, housing a trap that oscillates horizontally.

  • Shooting Layout: Five shooting positions arranged in a semicircle behind the trap house.

  • Targets: Clays are thrown at varying angles within a 22-degree arc, moving directly away from the shooter at speeds around 40–50 mph (64–80 km/h).

Scoring System:

  • 3 points for a first-barrel hit

  • 2 points for a second-barrel hit

  • 0 points for a miss

Tips for DTL Success:
To succeed in Down-the-Line shooting, focus on maintaining a consistent gun mount combined with a smooth swing. Practice reading the slight horizontal angles of targets to anticipate their path accurately. Using mid-range chokes such as Modified provides optimal shot patterns, while light recoil cartridges help maintain comfort during longer shooting sessions.

While DTL typically requires a fixed trap setup, Nordic Clays allows you to simulate Down-the-Line shooting anywhere with the TrapMaster. Adjust the angle for challenging straight-away targets and practice your timing. Pair it with biodegradable clay pigeons for an eco-friendly experience without sacrificing performance and enjoyment.
